Introduction
If you own a pet and like to take him/her with you on a traveling trip either by car or by airplane, the Sherpa Original Deluxe Carriers is just the right accessory you need to get the job done. These carriers are made with ventilation panels, so your pet gets lots of air and won’t get hot and are “guaranteed on board airline approved” on most domestic airlines.
It also has pockets to store some items for you as well. When traveling with your pet, you must ensure their safety and they will not escape out of the carrier. These carriers will provide that for your pet.
However, it is recommended that you let your pet become familiar with the carrier before you begin to put them on an airline or travel in your car with it. This means you will need to do some carrier training before leaving on your trip.
The carriers come in six colors and three sizes to choose from. You should be able to find one that you like and fits your pet.

Carrier Pet Training
Prior to traveling make sure to allow ample time for your pet to familiarize itself with its carrier. We recommend purchasing a carrier at least a month or more in advance to allow your pet sufficient time to become accustomed to it. Here are some steps you can take to help your pet get comfortable with the carrier:
- Purchase the correct size carrier for your pet based on their size and weight at least one month before the departure date.
- Place the carrier in an open area.
- Let your pet investigate the carrier and get used to the scent and shape.
- Place one of their favorite toys, treats, or blanket in the carrier to help entice them to enter into it on their own willingly without you forcing them into it.
- Once they are comfortable going into the carrier on their own, take your pet on short trips in the carrier so they get used to being transported in it.
- If the pet shows signs of not liking being inside or tries to escape from the carrier, it recommended that further training be done before going on the long car or plane trip.
- Have some treats on hand when your pet displays the proper behavior during the training sessions.
Car and Airplane Travel Tips
- Check with the airlines to know the rules and regulations before flying. Each carrier might be different.
- You must always supervise your pet.
- Never leave your pet unsupervised or unattended in the carrier.
- Do not give your pet sedatives or tranquilizers unless prescribed by your vet. Get clear instructions on the dosage, the frequency of dosage, and the risks involved when sedating your pet especially when traveling by plane.
- Do not use a choke, pinch, or training collar when traveling.
- Leads do not need to be used when traveling in the carrier.
- Be sure carrier is properly fastened with the seat belt in the backseat of the car before departing.
- Ensure your pet’s collar is secure and clearly displays proof of current vaccinations, your name, address and contact information.
Other Useful Tips
- Book reservations early for both you and your pet.
- Complete and print your Guaranteed On-Board forms or contact the airlines for specific requirements.
- Research the cities destination on pet rules & regulations and with the hotel or place you will be staying.
- Make an appointment with your vet to acquire a health certificate and be sure they are up to date with shots no more than 10 days prior to departure.
- Make a list of local vets in the place where you will be staying in case of an emergency.
- Prior to leaving, either by car or plane, have your entire pet’s documentation in order.
- Remember to bring your pet’s health certificate and Guaranteed on Board forms to show the gate agent.
- Pack all of the necessary things in advance to ensure nothing is forgotten.
- Plan ahead and know the various locations at the airport(s) where your pet can relieve itself prior to and between flying.
We highly recommend that your pet be potty trained first before they are going to be placed in the carrier for travel.

Questions About Sherpa Carriers
- What is the largest pet carrier you can take on a plane? Answer: It’s worth keeping in mind that airlines limit pet carry-ons to 17.5 x 12 x 7.5 inches. If you’re planning to check your pet carrier as cargo, the carrier must be compliant with International Air Transport Association regulations and meet a host of other requirements. Check with the airlines first before bringing your pet to the airport for weight limits as each airline may have different rules. The combined weight of your pet and the carrier cannot exceed 20 pounds on JetBlue flights.
- Do airlines actually measure pet carriers? Answer: The airlines won’t take the time to measure the crate’s size. However, you must make sure the crate you’re using is approved by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and that it will fit wherever it needs to on the plane.
- Should dogs be able to stand up in a carrier? Answer: Your dog should be able to turn itself around comfortably in the carrier. Most dogs are not able to stand up fully, which is normal. What’s most important is that your dog is comfortable and at ease. It is okay for the carrier to be a snugger fit so long as your dog is comfortable and under your supervision.
- Can my dog sit on my lap during flights? Answer: No. Pets are required to stay in a pet carrier throughout the domestic flight and stored under the seat in front of you.
- Do dog’s ears hurt on planes? Answer: Just like humans, a dog’s ears are vulnerable to high altitudes. Flying can cause mild pain for your dog if it has trouble equalizing its ears. Luckily, the dog’s outer ear canal equalizes pressure in the dog’s ear naturally, so if your dog’s ears hurt during the flight, it will pass within a few minutes.
- Should you feed your dog before a flight? Answer: Since a full stomach might be uncomfortable for your dog during travel, it’s recommend feeding him about four hours before the flight, if possible. While it’s best to refrain from feeding your dog right before the flight, you can (and should) continue to give him water right up to the time of travel.

By Elisha Ballard, February 3, 2015 – Five Stars (Plum) Loved it the purple is awesome & it was half the price of in store.
By Darice L. Blackman, January 31, 2015 – Five Stars (Multi-Colored) Perfect size for my puppy. He also plays in it when we’re not out and about!
By It, January 28, 2015 – Great Crate! (Medium Plum) Cute, functional, and fits easily in my car. I have two of these Sherpas. My dogs seem to prefer traveling in these versus a larger crate in my car. These bags must be comfortable for 10 pound dogs, because my dogs were very quiet and calm while riding in them for six hours. No whining, crying, or Benedryl…. These bags are very easy to carry, very easy to load the dog into, and appear to be well made. The purple color is crazy cute, too.
By Deborah Bruckner, January 27, 2015 – Beautiful Pet Carrier (Large Black) Beautiful pet carrier! Very well constructed and lightweight. Has dual openings for pet access and a storage compartment. A bit expensive but you get what you pay for. I’m happy with it.
By Merle T. Peterson, January 16, 2015 – This Is His Home (Medium Plum) This is my third Sherpa original deluxe med size bag for my Imperial Shih Tzu. Not only does Imp travel on planes/cars in his bag but insists on being lifted onto the bed every night while inside the bag. He sleeps in it quite often both on the bed and on the floor. This is his home – great design and durability. Please always make this style – it is the BEST!!!!! Couldn’t find a red one this time so had to go with the plum.
