Types of Orthopedic Dog Beds
The three types of orthopedic dog beds are:
- Memory Foam Beds
- Heated Beds
- Air Filled Beds
Memory Foam Beds
Not all memory foam orthopedic beds are the same. In order for a bed to be classified as orthopedic it must have the following characteristics:
- Memory foam is required to help eliminate pain in all pressure points.
- A supportive layer under the memory foam is required to prevent the dog from “bottom out” sinking deeper and deeper into the memory foam and eventually hitting the floor causing pain in the pressure points and defeating the purpose of the memory foam bed.
- The orthopedic bed must conform to the dog’s body and support the hips, shoulders, spine and all of the important joints to alleviate dogs suffering from arthritis, hip displacement and dysplasia.
Not all orthopedic beds are the same. When you view the video below, you will note a bed must have memory foam and also include some type of supportive layer to be considered truly orthopedic. Be weary of companies that sell beds consisting of only memory foam. Back to Orthopedic Beds For Large Dogs topics.
Heated Beds
Heated beds are also orthopedic because of the heat that is being distributed to the dog’s body when resting or sleeping in the bed. The heat provides a soothing feeling to his/her joints and muscles and helps them to be more comfortable especially if they suffer from arthritis. Heated beds should have a protective layer which covers the heating element so the dog will not touch it and hurt himself.

Air Filled Beds
The air filled beds require air to be inflated into the bed. The air provides cushion and protection for the hips, shoulders, joints and muscles. These type of beds come with an air pump for inflating the bed.
Advantage of Air-Filled Beds
- Generally last the life of the pet
- Easily transportable because they can be deflated and taken on vacation trips
- Available in many shapes, sizes and colors
