Certipur-us Certified Foam

A Seal You Can Trust On Dog Beds!

CertiPUR-US Certification Seal

CertiPUR-US Certification Seal

Introduction

Certipur-US certified memory foam dog beds does not contain any harmful chemicals and ozone depleters which can be dangerous to your pet’s health. Many dog bed manufacturers use memory foam that does contain these harmful chemicals because of the cost savings to them. They have no concern for the effects it might have on dogs or their owners.

When you purchase a dog bed that has this certification seal it will assure you that the memory foam materials used meets the standards that the CertPUR-US has established. It checks for polyurethane, emissions, and durability, which is analyzed by independent testing laboratories.

You can trust the seal that goes on products like dog beds that use memory foam or any other type of memory form product. In some instances, companies that sell memory form products may not display the certification logo or seal on the product even though it is part of the program.

When a products memory foam has been approved, all certified flexible polyurethane foams are tested and analyzed twice in the first year and is re-certified annually thereafter. Also, a random on-site foam production plant checks are made of those participating foam producers.

The following statement is taken from the CertiPUR-US website:

The Technical Guidelines provide complete details on the certification process and were established with guidance from the global foam industry and in conjunction with the leadership of the mattress and upholstered furniture industries. In addition, an advisory panel of scientists, academics, environmentalists and representatives of consumer groups provided invaluable input in the development process.

The certification means the memory form materials used in making the product are free from the chemicals listed below.

  • Made without ozone depleters – Ozone’s presence is important in our upper atmosphere, where it provides a shield from the sun’s radiant energy. The Montreal Protocol, adopted in 1987, mandated that industries eliminate ozone depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) by the year 2000. U.S. foam producers were well ahead of schedule in complying with this regulation. Unfortunately, in some parts of the world, CFCs are still used to manufacture foam. The CertiPUR-US label prohibits the use of any CFCs, or other ozone depleters, in the foam manufacturing process. The memory foam dog beds that are made in China may contain CFCs. Be sure to verify that the memory foam has the seal before purchase.
  • Made without PBDEs or the following Tris flame retardants: TCEP, TDBPP, TDCPP or TEPA.
  • Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy metals.
  • Made without formaldehyde.
  • Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
  • Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).

As you can see, the certification is very important as it deals with the environment and the health of not only your pets, but members of your family. These odors can escape from the foam once it is removed from the box as it is being cured before use. The odors can become very toxic to humans and animals and cause some serious health issues.

When shopping for a memory foam dog bed, be sure the product has its memory foam certified. The certification process is administered by a nonprofit organization, CertiPUS-US. This is a certification program for flexible polyurethane foam used in bedding and upholstered furniture. You can click on the following links for further details about the program: www.certipur.us and check out which brands are certified.

What Does This Mean?

The CertiPUR-US Certification means shoppers who want to put safety above all else will have a peace of mind knowing the memory foam material used is safe, not only for their pets, but also for humans. You also have a peace of mind knowing the material has passed exhaustive certification tests to determine its Eco-friendly, non-toxic, chemical-free, and is healthier for all and the environment.

We know your pet is important to you, so, be sure to find the certification seal on the memory foam dog bed products you are interested in buying. You will know immediately that the product is safe and your pet should enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most common frequently asked questions about the CertiPUR-US certification logo and seal.

Question 1: I saw the CertiPUR-US logo on display in a store, but I did not see the company or brand listed on your website. How do I know it really contains certified foam?

Answer: We keep the listings on our website updated weekly. If the company you are buying from is promoting its participation in the CertiPUR-US program and it is not listed on our site, please send specific information to info@certipur.us and we will follow-up. It could be that the company is misusing our logo and its products do not contain certified foam—in which case we will take swift legal action. More likely, the company is legitimately using certified foam, but hasn’t taken the time to take the necessary steps to be registered with the program. That process includes our verifying they are purchasing foam from one or more of the foam producers who are part of the CertiPUR-US program.

Question 2: Do companies that certify foams have to re-certify, or is it a one-time certification process?

Answer: Foam producers must go through the complete certification procedure every six months for the first year and then annually thereafter to maintain the certification for each type of foam they want certified.

Question 3: I am allergic to latex and am having a reaction to a mattress which contains certified foam. Can it have latex in it?

Answer: The CertiPUR-US program only certifies flexible polyurethane foam for bedding products and upholstered furniture. Latex foam is outside the scope of our certification. It is possible for a manufacturer to include a layer of latex in a mattress that contains certified polyurethane foam. In this case, as long as the flexible polyurethane foam is certified, the manufacturer would be allowed to use the CertiPUR-US seal. You should contact the mattress manufacturer to ask if your model contains latex.

Question 4: How do I know the specific product I am purchasing uses certified foam?

Answer: Some companies only offer products that contain certified foams, other companies offer certified foams in certain products or certain product lines. Ask the manufacturer to be sure.

Question 5: I have seen advertisements for the product I bought, which says it contains foam you certify. Why is there no label or hangtag on it?

Answer: Companies that have verified they use CertiPUR-US-certified flexible polyurethane foam in their products may use our seal, but are not required to label their products or packaging. Lack of our seal is not an indication the flexible polyurethane foam inside is not certified. You can look up the companies on our website to be sure they are participating in our program.

Question 6: If the foam is certified, does it mean it was made without flame retardants?

Answer: There are hundreds of flame retardants (FRs) that are used in various consumer products. We identify those FRs that could be used in upholstered furniture or mattresses. Certified foams are made without the following Tris flame retardants: TCEP, TDBPP, TDCPP or TEPA.

Question 7: A company on the internet says you certify mattresses, but I do not see the company listed on your website. Are their mattresses certified?

Answer: We do not certify mattresses, product lines, or companies. We only certify flexible polyurethane foam. Our certification is held by the manufacturer of the flexible polyurethane foam and use of our seal is conveyed to their customers who verify that they use CertiPUR-US-certified flexible polyurethane foam.

Conclusion

You probably did not know that memory foam can be made with toxic materials that are not healthy for humans and pets. It is comforting to know that there is a non-profit organization that performs tests to ensure the memory foam material is free from any toxic chemicals where the memory foam is made.

Remember, not all memory foam or orthopedic dog beds have the CertiPUS-US seal on it. You may have to do a little homework first before making your dog bed purchase. This may include talking with the salesperson or even contacting the manufacture to determine that their product has the seal.

We shared how important this seal is and can provide all dog and pet owners a peace of mind whenever their pet is sitting or sleeping on a memory foam dog bed.
